Snow retention hardware comes in a few different styles. Here is how snow guards, snow fence, and snow rail systems compare.
Snow retention is not a single product category. Depending on the roof type, snow load, and project goals, the right approach usually falls into one of three general styles.
Snow Guards
Individual snow guards are small, spaced components attached directly to the roof surface. They work by breaking up the snowpack into smaller sections so it melts and releases gradually instead of all at once. Guards are common on smaller roof areas or where a lower-profile appearance is a priority.
Snow Fence
Snow fence systems use a horizontal barrier, typically a mesh or bar element, mounted above the roof surface near the eave. The fence holds back the full snowpack rather than breaking it into sections, which makes it a common choice for roofs with heavier expected snow loads.
Snow Rail
Rail-based systems combine a continuous rail with purpose-built attachment clamps or brackets, creating a continuous barrier along the eave without penetrating the roof surface on compatible panel types. This is the category ArcticAnchor™'s Rail Series is built around, designed for standing seam, exposed fastener, and tile roof applications.
The right style depends on the roof, the expected snow load, and the look the project calls for. Reviewing the roof type selector is a good starting point for narrowing down which ArcticAnchor™ system fits a specific project.
